By It's Very Nature: Per Se

I was at the supermarket and asked the clerk if they carried a certain frozen food brand. We walked up and down the aisle. When we got to the end of it, she said, "I don't think we carry that line, per se." Per se ?  I was loving her use of the word in this instance that we couldn't find the frozen, gluten-free Amy's macaroni and cheese. "Hmmmmm," I responded, clinging onto the bravado of her using the word in this instance. Per se : Try adding it to any sentence tomorrow. It's better than "like" and more interesting than "um."

Word Trend Alert

Perfect. Have you noticed we are moving towards "perfect"-ion? Just as many people who begin their sentences with "So ..." are now ending them with "Okay. Perfect." At the hairdresser I was asked if I'd like coffeee, tea or water. "Water, please." "Okay. Perfect." At the supermarket, I asked where the watermelon was. "Oh, I see it in the front." "Okay. Perfect." A friend asked if I had watched the last episode of "sense8." "I've only seen the first episode." "Okay. Perfect." I tried to order cabinet knobs online. When there was a glitch with the order, I called customer service. "I'm on the site, but the order isn't going through." "Okay. Perfect," the rep said. What is so perfect about everything??

Checking Me Out

I was at an appliance store purchasing a big-tag item and thought I'd apply for an enticingly long no-interest loan. To complete the credit check, I had to get on the phone with the Wells Fargo rep. Of the several questions he asked me, this was the MOST ARCANE: "At what address did you receive your Social Security number in 1965 ?" And I'm like, "Say whahhhh? Could you repeat that question??" And he's like, "Where did you.  Receive your Social Security number. In 1965 ?" "Hmmm .... let's see. I was in 7th grade ... was it 38 Curtiss Place in Maplewood, New Jersey?" "Yes-s-s-s-s-s!!" said the WF rep. Up the music, Joe! ! And P.S.: Where was this kind of credit check scrutiny in 2008???

Klotz Catches Us a Breeze

Drew Klotz, Kinetic Sculptor This kinetic sculpture captures a peak-of-summer breeze on a July afternoon in Vergennes, Vermont. The pirouette of paddles and circles beckons onlookers to seek grace, balance and simplicity. Listen to the wind. (Don't jump when you hear the bark.)

Just Another "Squirrel Appreciation Day"

As I was walking to the lake for a morning meditation, my affection for squirrels was reincarnated. In the garbage receptacle by the path was a furry-tailed silhouette with a huge chunk of food in its mouth. When the squirrel heard me approaching it froze just long enough for me to catch it snacking. "Who me?" Click here for my Huffington Post,  "Squirrel Appreciation Day: Don't Miss Celebrating!"   There is also a piece in Sunday’s New York Times Metro section, “Gray Squirrels, New York 's Furry Cache Machines. "  I like writing and reading about these quirky creatures who chitter and chatter, then scram and suddenly re-appear to scavenge for more.

Like ... Talk to Me

Apropros Hostess Prompt So I was with friends this evening and was, like, at this restaurant? And there was a hostess who sort of talked like she was from The Valley? And then she asked us if we'd like a seat. And we were like ... okay.
