RECORD-REVIEW "Talk of the Town"

By BONNI BRODNICK

Members of the Pound Ridge Police Benevolent Association are usually cool, calm and collected. Want to watch them flip out? Town seniors are cordially invited to a special pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Conant Hall. It’s been a few years since the PRPBA has hosted this PB, and they’re looking forward to even better attendance with the new email system that informs seniors about town events. To help out at the flapjack fest, event coordinator and president, Sgt. Mike Armistead will be joined by his wife Michelle, and their two kids, Mike and Jen. Other hotcake flippers will include Sgt. Thomas Mulcahy, his wife Kelly and their sons Jack and Charlie. Chief of Police David Ryan, Police Officer Gary Olivier and Police Department Secretary Caroline Meyer will also be on hand getting all syrup-y. To register for the special breakfast, please call Louise Paolicelli at the Recreation Department (764-8201) or email prseniors@townofpoundridge.com.
Now there’s no excuse for your teenagers to say, “There’s nothing to do around here.” The Recreation Department has a new program for 13 and 14-year olds called Teen Travel Camp, with daily trips to such fun spots as Lake Compound, The Intrepid, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and Six Flags New England, to name just a few. The camp runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 28 through August 4. The fee is $1,200 for the six weeks and teens have to sign up for the entire 6 weeks (otherwise it becomes an accounting nightmare). Able directors for the program are Jill Tatarzewski (a previous staffer with PR Day Camp) and Christopher Vazzano (Fox Lane High School lacrosse coach and a specialty coach from PR Day camp). “Our regular day camp will feature some new trips (still being worked on) and our every Tuesday entertainers,” said David Goldberg, director of Recreation. “We also have two new assistant camp directors, Stephen Muller and Tom Jordan, both of whom came from within the day camp staff.” For more information on summer programs by the PR Rec Dept., call David (6764-3987) or Jo Ann Luksin (764-0947) at the Town House.
After a long and snowy winter, spring is finally here. The Pound Ridge Garden Club joyously proclaims that it is now time to plant seeds. Per the pros: fill the peat pots and gently moisten the soil, then plant your seeds according to the directions on the packet. Some seeds need to be covered and some do not; some require only one per pot, other varieties of flowers and vegetables call for a sprinkling of seeds in each pot. The secret to success is to keep the seeds moist. Stand the peat pots in a shallow tray of water as top watering may dislodge tiny seeds. When they have sprouted and have three levels of leaves, the top of the seeding needs to be pinched off, and the weaker seedlings pinched at soil level. Don't pull them outdoors just yet as this will disturb the still fragile root structure of the strong seedling. In about six weeks, when there's no longer a danger of frost and garden soil is workable, plant the seedlings outdoors. Keep them in their peat pots; these will gradually decompose. Make sure you continue to follow seed packet instructions as to location: full-sun, shade or mixed-light. Continue to keep seedlings moist with a daily spray of water from the hose. Watch them come to life just around the time that the thousands of daffodils the Garden Club has planted through the years begin to bloom.
It’s silent but it’s certainly not a secret. The Pound Ridge Library Foundation is seeking silent auction donations for the upcoming “Annual Taste of Pound Ridge,” sponsored by the Pound Ridge Business Association. Save May 5 for this wonderful town event where we promise you won’t go home hungry. Ten local restaurants, food and drink vendors will offer appetizing dishes in a festive atmosphere. Donations large and small are needed. In the past, silent auction items have included vacation rentals, tickets to sporting/theater events, gift baskets, jewelry and oh-so-much more. All money raised will support the Pound Ridge Library. To donate items or services, please contact Vivian Falco at 764-4988 or vivian.falco@gmail.com. Go to your g-mail calendar or the one by your fridge, crack open your Palm or your Blackberry and mark it down: May 5, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. The spot: Albano Appliance & Service on Westchester Avenue. We’ll be waiting for you.
