HUFFINGTON POST: "10 Thanksgiving Tips for Turkey Day: Keep it Real"

... On Thanksgiving Day, don't go overboard on the selection of pies. Three pies are more than enough if you are having 10 guests or less. That's 24 slices of pie, people.

And BTW, did you know that you'll get extra points for passing both the salt and pepper as a set, even though someone only asked for one?  Who knew.

"Selfie" Beats Out "Twerk"

I love the new Oxford words of 2013: SELFIE (everyone knows that one) ... but did you know:
HELFIE - a picture of one's hair
BELFIE - a picture of one's posterior
WELFIE - a workout selfie
DRELFIE - a drunken selfie

SHMELFIE.

DEPARTURE Has Arrived: The New Work of Painter Jeffrey Terreson

By BONNI BRODNICK
WINTER"S SPRING triptych, 73" x 144", Oil Wax on Maple Panel

There’s a new medium in town and Jeffrey Terreson can’t wait to unveil it. Renowned for his interpretive paintings of horses and abstracts, Terreson now takes us on a ride to a new place of invention, innovation and experimentation.
The paintings in DEPARTURE, his new show, features textures and sub-textures that may appear chaotic and in every color of the rainbow, but are dominated by a singular chromaticity. Take a look closer and what appears to be a ribbon of color is, literally, just that. The work has a flowing fabric feeling that will make the viewer want to touch it.  But more importantly, it captures the eye on an exciting visual journey that stops one from studying the medium and looking more at the color and the shapes. The pioneering texturing produced by mixing encaustic wax and oils creates intricate patterns on wood and steel panels that continue to show the artistic discipline and fine arts sensibility of Terreson’s work.
DEPARTURE includes “Winters Spring” (73’ x 144”), a triptych that brands the show with a colorful crescendo of medium that creates one- to two-inches of mesmerizing relief, demonstrating a maturity and dynamic use of texture. The technique flourishes in the freedom of discovery that is what brings such brilliance to Terreson’s new work that is an organic progression to what he has done in the past.
“You don’t need a brush to be a fine artist,” Terreson said. “I’m trying to continually find new ways of painting. There’s no formula and it’s invigorating. It’s in this freedom that I’m able to grow.
“I’m overwhelmed with excitement doing this show,” he continued. “I don’t know how it will be accepted, but I’m taking a chance as a departure from my earlier work. And if you don’t take a chance, you never move forward.”
Born in Bronxville, New York in 1955, Terreson earned a four-year merit scholarship from Columbus College of Art and Design, where he received his BFA in 1976 at the top of his class. Supporting himself as a commercial illustrator, his art was purchased by such companies as ABC, NBC, Mobil, IBM, National Geographic and Purina.
Terreson eventually followed his passion to paint and continues to evolve as a fine artist.  His paintings can be found in more than 150 private collections, including Ralph Lauren and Joseph Abboud.
Other than being represented by Newbury Fine Arts in Boston, Jeffrey Terreson is a self-represented artist. For more information, please call 914.772.6570 or email Terresonstudio@gmail.com. Additional information is available at JeffreyTerreson.com

Holy Moly! A Flying Squirrel!

Last night was truly thrilling at the Brodnick house as our beloved (domestic house) cat, Truman, brought in a flying squirrel.

According to Wikipedia  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_flying_squirrel):

Southern flying squirrels have grey brown fur on top with darker flanks and are a cream color underneath. They have large dark eyes and a flattened tail. They have a furry membrane called a patagium which extends between the front and rear legs, used to glide through the air.

Southern flying squirrels feed on fruit and nuts from trees such as red and white oak, hickory and beech. They store food, especially acorns, for winter consumption. They also dine on insects, buds, mushrooms, mycorrhizal fungi, carrion, bird eggs and nestlings and flowers. Predators include snakes,[3] owls, hawks and raccoons. Domestic house cats can be dangerous to these animals.

Thankfully, we were able to rescue the poor thing in a shoe box and set him free outside.

Whew.

Time Change / Time for a Change

1:00 AM  - I feel like tonight is New Year's Eve. We just moved to Wilton yesterday and I am waiting for 2:00 AM to watch the time go back an hour for Daylight Savings. I will have officially hit the "Restart" button.

1:48 AM - I am watching the time change on the clock in the upper right corner of my screen.

1:53 AM - It's also like I am trying to win a bid on eBay.

1:57 AM - It's 1:57 AM. Do you know where your children are?

1:58 AM - Two minutes and counting.  (But who's counting?)

2:00 AM - Wow. That was intense.

1:00 AM - I'm not even tired any more.
